Projects in Data Communications
We have undertaken studies of data communications protocols for
space applications and Internet communications:
- CCSDS Packet Telecommand changes (COP-1B)
- CCSDS Proximity-1 Space Link Protocol
- CCSDS File Delivery Protocol (CFDP)
- TCP, UDP and IP
We have long experience in data communications and our earlier projects in this area include:
- Terminal Emulation: We developed a program to allow an IBM PC to be used
as a User Input Station to the Mission Control and Computing Centre at
JPL in Pasadena. The program exactly emulated an old type of hardware
terminal which was no longer available. ESA used the program to send
commands via the NASA Deep Space Network to the Giotto spacecraft on its
fly-by missions to comets Halley and Grigg-Skjellerup in 1986 and 1992.
- VSAT Network: We developed real time software implementing the
low level protocols of a VSAT network. The network supported satellite
links at 64 Kbps. The network terminals consisted of IBM PS/2 computers
fitted with 80186-based communications coprocessors. The real time
software ran partly in the PS/2 computers and partly in the coprocessors.
